In collaboration with the physician, performs a variety of clinical activities across the continuum of care to the critically injured. Functions collaboratively with other members of the health care team to implement the role of expert practitioner, consultant, educator, manager, and researcher within the area of trauma or general surgery. Possesses a high degree of knowledge, skill, and competency in the provision of surgical and trauma care directly to the patient.

Evaluates and documents patient progress toward attainment of expected outcomes. Coordinates and facilitates continuity of care. Post-op rounding on surgical patients.
Designs, instructs and coordinates information and programs for patients, health care professionals and patients' families based on identified needs.
Functions as a liaison between health care providers and patient families during their surgery and hospital stay.
Maintains accurate and timely records of all procedures and activities according to specific practice requirements.
Provides supervising physician with all pertinent information concerning specific patient problems, which can assist in the development of treatment plans.
Serves as a clinical resource to staff, patients, and families.
Actively participates in discharge planning in collaboration with Social Work/Case Management to effectively optimize length of stay.
Facilitates patient referrals for specialty consultations in conjunction with supervising physician.
Assists the supervising physician in the in-patient areas by conducting patient rounds, recording patient progress, determining and implementing therapy plans in conjunction with the supervising physician and compiling and recording narrative case summaries.
Develops and implements a personal development program to maintain current knowledge of advances in the field of trauma care
Participates in professional educational education activities and maintains a minimum of 48 hours of trauma related CME on average, over a three year period.
Assists with transporting monitored patients to the critical care units.
Participates in quality improvement through utilization of research, data collection, and CQI initiatives.
Attends work on schedule.
Provides surgical support to neurosurgeons and trauma surgeons within state and hospital regulations as required.
Serves as part of the Trauma Team and responds to all trauma activities when in the hospital and/or oncall.
A. Education / Training:
? Master's Degree in Nursing with clinical specialization from an accredited institution
B. Work Experience:
? Minimum of 1 year APP experience in Trauma, Critical Care, or Neurosurgery required
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:
? State of Michigan Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license required
? ANCC certification (or equivalent) required
? AHA BLS required
D. Other Qualifications:
? Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills consistent with mission and values.
? Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients in situations requiring sensitivity and tact.
