Munson Healthcare Vice President of Continuous Improvement in Traverse City, Michigan

SUMMARY

The Vice President of Continuous Improvement is responsible for supporting the organization’s lean transformation and achieving its goals. This position supports senior leaders around the system in establishing and executing the system’s priorities on both an enterprise, and local level. It is also directly responsible for the Continuous Improvement team and their work in problem solving, teaching and training elements of the operating system as well as providing project management for key initiatives. The position reports directly to the President and CEO of MHC and supports the functioning of senior level committees and efforts.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Advanced, relevant administrative degree required, e.g. MBA, MHA, MPH, MSN, MD, DO, etc.

At least 5 years as a lean practitioner in healthcare or other sectors.

Advanced training or experience in lean theory and methodology, strategy planning, project management.

Demonstrated experience in facilitating complex problem solving, goal setting or strategy discussions bringing the appropriate process steps and associated tools to support the work.

Demonstrated experience in applying, teaching and coaching elements of the MHC Alignment Framework including their individual and synergistic qualities.

Demonstrated experience facilitating challenging conversations to ensure diverse stakeholders are engaged and respectful discourse occurs in the course of problem solving or strategy development.

Demonstrated collaboration skills and ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization.

Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, time management, change management, performance improvement and project management skills.

Demonstrated skills in organization, verbal and written communications, customer service, critical thinking, managing multiple competing priorities and understanding team dynamics.

Demonstrated leadership approach to coach and develop leaders, focus on process/systems, and have regular interaction with staff to remove barriers that prevent achievement of organizational goals.

ORGANIZATION

  • Reports to the MHC System CEO

  • Works in close collaboration with the Chief Transformation Officer and all MHC Presidents, Corporate VPs

  • Serves on the MHC Executive Team

  • Supports senior executive committees as appropriate

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  1. Supports the mission, vision, values and principles of Munson Healthcare.

  2. Embraces and supports the Munson Alignment Framework.

  3. Provides leadership and vision for the Continuous Improvement Department.

  4. Supports the development and achievement of MHC’s True North and MHC’s strategic goals.

  5. Works with individual leaders to support strategic planning activities that are consistent with the overall MHC alignment framework. This includes; development of appropriate process steps, team/committee structures, planning techniques and timelines for the given initiative. Provides direct facilitation support as requested to ensure effective team dynamics and project deliverables are met.

  6. Responsible for the design, education and coaching of the operating system. Supports leaders at all levels in the successful adoption within their areas of responsibility.

  7. Supports the organizations transformation efforts and demonstrates understanding and application of principle based transformation theory and incorporates it into daily work.

  8. Utilize lean concepts, tools and deployment methodology to advance the Alignment Framework.

  9. Utilize a broad range of analytical methods and tools including demonstrated knowledge of application and effectiveness given specific circumstances.

  10. Responsible for supporting organizational prioritization systems including resource allocation methods and tracking.

  11. Responsible for supporting organizational A3 thinking, including; the creation of tools and templates and appropriate developmental training and coaching at all levels and capabilities.

  12. Support work to improve clinical effectiveness, reduces waste, streamlines clinical processes, and ensures high reliability of care throughout the system.

  13. Provides leadership and expertise to support the ongoing skill development of members of the Continuous Improvement team to ensure optimal support of organizational improvement work. Supports training and development in lean and problem solving as requested and appropriate.

  14. Supports and coordinates (where appropriate) system continuous improvement efforts.

  15. Provides executive level project management support including design, tracking and visual management as appropriate.

  16. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
