Position Purpose:

The Clinical Quality Nurse in this role will be working with Cardiothoracic surgery program. This position collects data, data entry, producing reports, providing feedback and data driven guidance back to key stakeholders. This program offers benchmarking data in a number of different patient care settings to identify opportunities for improvement activities. The two programs that you will work with are: The Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons Quality Collaborative (MSTCVS) and Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

POSITION PURPOSE

The Quality Coordinator is responsible for oversight and management of associated quality initiative programs and databases. This role helps identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and best practices. They are responsible for the collection and submission of required collaborative data to external databases for benchmarking and reporting requirements. The manage all program requirements including but not limited to: Selecting cases for chart abstraction, data management, reports, and interpreting data and sharing between team members with presentations and meetings adhering to time deadlines set by the collaborative.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow data collection set by quality collaborative

  • Included cases to meet caseload requirements

  • Variable abstraction

  • Data entry into collaborative database

  • Data mining and reporting

  • Provides direction and support for other collaborative participants, both internal and external Maintaining accurate, timely and efficient data submission Maintains current version enhancements, training and other program requirements

  • Helps develop an efficient and automated data collection process to streamline data collection Review Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) policies and protocols for site visits Participate in Inter-Rater Reliability and achieve a passing score per collaborative guidelines

  • Attend program conference calls and meetings as required Establish excellent working relationships with member of the hospital community that this program interacts with

  • May have patient contact with letters and/or phone calls to assess occurrences and outcomes related to program requirements Maintains an effective team approach for quality improvement, including: identifying areas for improvement, offer solutions, actively participates in quality committees and improvement activities

  • Assumes responsibility for performance of duties to achieve quality improvement goals as directed by collaborative and SJMHS Initiates and/or leads quality improvement efforts

  • Communicates and collaborates with appropriate staff (internal and external) Assumes leadership for specific quality improvements projects Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in associated field by reading appropriate literature Present data/reports to physicians, other team members and stakeholders are required Performs related responsibilities as required Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System.

  • Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS.

  • Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in nursing

Experience: Minimum three (3) years' experience in associated nursing specialty

Clinical chart review and abstraction experience preferred

Quality improvement experience preferred

Licensure: Current Registered Nurse licensure in Michigan required

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Computer skills necessary to manage and manipulate large databases

  • Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point)

  • Knowledge of patient care environment (service line) which the collaborative is associated

  • Proficiency in the review and abstraction of clinical patient information from multiple electronic medical records

  • Ability to validate and analyze data

  • Excellent organizational skills: Detail-oriented, able to meet established deadlines

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with physicians, nurses and other support staff

  • Ability to work both independently and in team-oriented settings

  • Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate program requirements

  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills

  • Familiarity with basic statistical concepts is preferred

  • Ability to use data to drive practice improvement
