Trinity Health - IHA Dental Hygienist in Pontiac, Michigan

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Dental Hygienist is a licensed member of the dental health team, dedicated to helping patients maintain good oral health and preventing dental disease. Primary functions focus on direct patient care and oral health patient education. Works within guidelines on the Clinical Support Staff Scope of Practice document.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in the oral health management of all clinic patients.

  • Obtains baseline oral hygiene assessment data based upon accepted principles of oral hygiene and periodontal care.

  • Records patient-hygienist transactions as they occur in the patient's dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided.

  • Provides oral health education and appropriate individual counseling for all center dental patients.

  • Provides clinical oral hygiene services including dental prophylaxis, scaling, sealant application and fluoride application.

  • Integrates appropriate patient dental hygiene care with other health care professionals involved in the patient's health care management.

  • Organizes and performs preventive oral health presentations at on-site and off-site locations.

  • Assists in the provision of technical assistance and health education in the community as requested.

  • Performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by a dentist.

  • Assists in the maintenance of all Dental Department areas relative to infection control, exposure control and safety issues.

  • Receives and places necessary telephone calls.

  • Insures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene.

CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE: Unrestricted license to practice Oral Hygiene in the State of Michigan; Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH); Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Minimum 3 years' working experience as a Dental Hygienist; 5 years' experience is preferred.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS):

  • Comprehensive knowledge of oral hygiene care in outpatient settings. Knowledge of the principles and practice of modern oral hygiene and periodontal patient care is necessary.

  • Cognizant of the public health, social and economic factors which have an impact on overall health, and more specifically the oral health, of their patients.

  • Ability to perform all Dental Hygienist job responsibilities as outlined on the Clinical Support Staff Scope of Practice document.

  • Ability to provide clinical oral hygiene services consistent with accepted professional practices and standards and in compliance with applicable state and federal law and the center's clinical protocols.

  • Ability to creatively work with other health care professionals from a variety of disciplines to achieve maximal program effectiveness and patient benefit.

  • Proficient/knowledgeable in dental terminology.

  • Proficiency in operating a standard desktop and Windows-based computer system, including but not limited to, electronic medical records, email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required while performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal forms, including proper phone etiquette. Ability to speak before groups of people and apply consultative skills to work effectively within assigned areas of the organization.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment; courteous and friendly demeanor.

  • Ability to work effectively with various levels of organizational members and diverse populations including IHA staff, providers, patients, vendors, family members, outside customers and community groups.

  • Ability to cross-train in other areas of practice in order to achieve smooth flow of all operations.

  • Good organizational and time management skills to effectively juggle multiple priorities, time constraints and ever-changing medical/dental situations.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and creative problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations needed during the course of performing basic job duties.

  • Knowledge of the compliance aspects of clinical care and patient privacy and best practices in dental office operations.

  • Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner.

  • Ability to work irregular hours.

  • Ability to travel to other office/practice sites and meeting and training locations.

  • Successful completion of IHA competency-based program within introductory and training period.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Physical activity that often requires keyboarding, phone work and charting.

  • Physical activity that often requires time working on a computer.

  • Physical activity that often requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching.

  • Physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with the practice of modern oral hygiene, performed on a repetitive basis.

  • Physical activity that sometimes requires lifting, pushing and/or pulling up to 20 lbs.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision, ability to distinguish letters and symbols and the ability to adjust and focus.

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment.

  • Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English. Ability to also be clinically fluent in Spanish is preferred.
