Role Summary/Purpose:

The VP, Payment Networks Strategy creates and implements strategies to match Synchrony’s strategic initiatives to the strengths and capabilities at payment networks such as MasterCard, American Express, and others. This key relationship manager helps lead initiatives across all of Synchrony’s platforms, from business development opportunities for private label and cobrands cards, to product implementations and network expansions in CareCredit and Synchrony Car Care. This role will support selected networks from the portfolio of MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express, and Worldpay.

This strategic leader collaborates cross-functionally with colleagues from technology, account management, marketing, credit, analytics, and legal to drive growth by strategically leveraging the payment networks to drive new product and service initiatives and expand payment networks. You will be responsible for utilizing network partners to drive revenue for Synchrony, as well as cut expenses and reduce risk to the organization.

This role reports to the SVP, Network & Strategic Relationships and is part of the Payment Networks and Strategic Partnerships team.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Act as a subject matter expert on payments networks’ strengths, products, financials, and operations

  • Support Synchrony’s crucial strategies, such as direct-to-consumer product development, with appropriate products and services available from the payments networks

  • Create, nurture, and leverage relationships with key payment networks externally, and strategic priority leaders and portfolio General Managers internally

  • Optimize products, services, and financials by liaising and negotiating with the networks

  • Identify emerging capabilities, products, and technologies offered by network partners that can be leveraged by Synchrony. Define strategy and business case, and drive adoption across platforms

  • Lead discussions and negotiations with payments networks, collaborating with stakeholders including IT, analytics, credit, marketing, risk, finance, operations, and compliance

  • Collaborate with business development and cobrand colleagues to build winning pitches that include the best offers from the payments networks

  • Identify opportunities to strategically share learnings and offerings across platforms

  • Partner with Analytics team to best leverage combined network and Synchrony data to drive growth

  • Partner with payments networks to develop and drive marketing and leverage digital assets

  • Serve as Supplier Manager to the payments networks, which are considered critical suppliers to Synchrony


  • Bachelor’s degree and a Minimum of 8 years’ experience with managing a payment network relationship(s) or as an associate of a payment network OR working in payments/fintech; or in lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, a Minimum of 12 years’ experience with managing a payment network relationship(s) or as an associate of a payment network OR working in payments/fintec

  • Minimum of 3 years of relationship management experience, including working with cross-functional business partners and senior leadership

  • Minimum of 3 years project management experience, managing multiple programs/projects simultaneously

  • Strong presentation skills and ability to leverage PowerPoint

  • Strong PC proficiency (MS Office Suite) or comparable software application

Desired Characteristics:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • MBA or Master’s Degree in finance/marketing

  • Demonstrated PMO and organizational skills showcasing leadership and working cross-functionally

  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and strategically

  • Strong communication skills, ability to communicate to C-level, excellent presentation skills

  • Financial services experience

  • Strong leadership skills, and experience influencing and gaining credibility with experts across all business functions

  • Experience in consumer or business credit products

  • Experience working with retail client teams

  • High-level negotiation, communication, and influencing skills

  • Strong people- and resource-management skills

  • Strong customer orientation

  • A fun, positive attitude, team oriented, willingness & desire to learn payments

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the selection process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • Effective 1-1-18, new hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 24 months’ time in position before they can post. All internal employees must have at least a “consistently meets expectations” performance rating and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance requirement).

The salary range for this position is 115,000.00 - 230,000.00 USD Annual

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA and Metro NY and some positions are bonus eligible
