Axalta operates its business in two operating segments: Performance Coatings and Transportation Coatings, serving four end markets, including: Refinish, Industrial, Light Vehicle and Commercial Vehicle, across the following four regions: North America, EMEA, Latin America and Asia-Pacific.

The Quality Area Manager facilitates the commercialization of new model year colors and technologies by ensuring the management of change- technology process is executed and by focusing on what we expect people to do.

The Operations Technical lead takes responsibility for all aspects of the introduction of new product into the operations QA and OTS laboratories, including but not limited to: development of color standards (CCD process), training of personnel, implementation of new instruments, equipment, test protocol (test methods and procedures) and maintenance of spray programs and equipment (along with the site application group).


This position reports to Unit Manager - Finished Product and has the responsibility for the introduction of new product technologies at the Axalta Mount Clemens Site. They are responsible for interfacing across all levels within the technical, operations and business organizations to ensure the quality of the product delivered to the customer.


Stakeholders: Manufacturing areas, Plant Technical, R&D, Sales and Marketing and Customer Sites

  • Manage the commercialization of product

  • Be familiar with regulatory requirements specific to the lab and ensure new technologies and equipment operate within those standard

  • Review and write test protocol based on internal and external technical customer requirements in effort to stay up to-date as new technology introduced to the lab or modifications made to existing technology test packages and test methods to drive consistent lab operations and behaviors.

  • Inform lab personnel of changes to test methods and procedures

  • Help identify and define minor and major capital projects by providing data, defining long and short-term lab requirements in support of product commercialization

  • Collaborate with site Quality Management to ensure compliance with certification requirements for TS-16949/IATF-16949

  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and implement in collaboration with site continuous improvement team

  • Responsible to monitor the execution plan for lean manufacturing initiative to ensure all aspects are implemented on time by performing JCC and process confirmation checks

  • Coach and mentor team to create a culture of excellence by conducting performance evaluations

  • Laboratory Operation

  • Develop a training plan for laboratory personnel including a skill gap and attribute analysis

  • Help build a strong safety culture , which will enable excellence in safety performance and will also form the foundation for excellence in all areas of operation.

  • Provide product information, test results and technical services to internal and external customers

  • Work with GBT and PT to make sure product requirements are integrated in the QA and OTS laboratory in support of short and long term plans

  • Training

  • Ensure lab personnel have been trained on the correct use of lab equipment and test protocol

  • Implement a schedule for initial training and refresher training for personnel: equipment, test methods and safety

  • Provide developmental training opportunities for all lab personnel

  • Maintenance and housekeeping

  • Support housekeeping standard and implement (site 5S initiative)

  • Support and execute maintenance standard and plan for laboratory equipment (Preventative Maintenance and Calibration) and facilities

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Educational discipline in Engineering, preferably Chemical, desired.

  • Minimum of 5years of direct supervisory experience preferred.

  • Experience with resin or polymer chemical manufacturing processes preferred.

  • Experience with enterprise software applications and automated distribution systems.

  • Excellent computer application skills with working knowledge of MS office (Excel, Word and Power Point).

  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities to improve production efficiencies, reduce costs, improve quality.

  • Ability to supervise, resource, and engage in work within self-managed team environment by effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and reconcile diverse viewpoints within and between teams.
