Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) works under the supervision and direction of the operating surgeon and in collaboration with the health care team members, to carry out technical behaviors that assist the surgeon in performing a safe operative procedure. If Certified RNFA, the national certification is to be maintained according to the national organizations criteria. A copy of the national certification documentation will be maintained in the employee's file. The RNFA / CRNFA possesses a working knowledge of operating room procedures with respect to attire, infection control and is familiar with individual requirements and recommended practices of regulatory compliance. The RNFA / CRNFA perform other surgical team duties, such as, scrub/circulate/turnover and other duties as assigned when not functioning in the role of the first assistant. As a member of the HFHS staff, daily assignments will be made based on departmental need. The RNFA / CRNFA must have the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon, other team members and the patient, with respect to the requirements of a particular surgical procedure. Has procedure knowledge related to normal /abnormal anatomy; ability to anticipate and provide for potential complications; confirms that instrumentation is appropriate for patient age and size. Reports directly to the OR Director / Manager and/or assigned specialty team leadership. The daily contact with medical, residents, administrative, nursing support staff and vendors will be collegial, professional and in accordance with HFHS customer service and service excellence standards.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: The RNFA must have acquired the necessary knowledge, judgment and skills specific to the expanded role of RNFA Clinical practice. Intraoperatively, the RNFA practices at the direction of the surgeon and does not concurrently function as a scrub nurse. Current Michigan RN license. Certification as a CRNFA is desired from the Competency Institute and Credentialing (CCI). A RNFA who is not certified upon hire will have 1 year from date of hire to complete the certification. All staff within the current job description will continue to perform in the job classification and known as a RNFA. The CRNFA is a perioperative RN with (3) years experience as a registered nurse who has successfully completed a RNFA program (didactic and clinical requirements) that meets Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI) and Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) educational standards, has successfully completed the CRNFA exam from CCI and is certified as a Certified Nurse Operating Room (AORN).
