behavioral health specialist to provide assessments and dispositions for patients in our emergency room as well requests for admissions from outside agencies

Position Summary: The Assessment Services Clinician is responsible for determining the appropriate placement of incoming referrals within the continuum of behavioral health services. Generally, conducts a telephone intake, assessing the patient’s presenting problem, current symptoms, and acuity and makes a determination as to the patient’s appropriateness for admission to the hospital’s behavioral health inpatient, intensive outpatient or outpatient treatment programs. The Assessment Services Clinician may also conduct face to face patient assessments at the patient's bedside (in the case of an individual hospitalized in a SJMC medical bed) or in the emergency department at the request of the attending physician, or as a walk-in in the outpatient clinic.

Qualifications: Must have a Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution. Must be licensed in the State of Michigan and adhere to the code of ethics for area of licensure. At least five years of professional, relevant experience in behavioral health is required. Specialized training and education in behavioral health, including substance use disorders is preferred. Must have demonstrated ability to effectively represent the department, and to communicate directly and clearly. Computer skills are essential.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Demonstrates clear diagnostic and clinical skills appropriate to the age of the patient. Demonstrates capacity to identify and manage high-risk situations in which patients may be harmful to themselves or others.

Demonstrates ability to correlate current and historical dysfunction with current diagnosis.

Has knowledge of department, hospital-wide, and community resources. Is able to gather and integrate a wide variety of information into a summary of the patient’s presenting problem. At the request of physicians in the emergency room or within behavioral health, provides face to face assessment of patients and makes appropriate recommendations to the physician.

Must demonstrate competency in assisting patients with completing a safety plan, when appropriate.

May make follow-up calls to individuals including patients recently discharged from SJMC Behavioral Health Programs.

RN’s in Assessment roles will assist patients with questions, concerns and needs related to medications, appropriately consulting with the on-call physician in the absence of the attending psychiatrist.

RN’s in Assessment roles will also assist patients with prescription refills where the attending psychiatrist has given prior authorization to do so. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participates in their resolution.

Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

Conducts oneself in accordance with St Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System's Services Excellence Standards and Standards of Conduct.

Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, development and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies.

Understands legal issues that affect treatment, including but not limited to: child custody, divorce laws, child/adult abuse, duty to warn, recipient rights policies and procedures, alternative treatment orders (ATO’s), and the commitment process for inpatient hospitalization.

Seeks consultation and supervision appropriately during patient assessment.

Participates in case reviews and team meetings and takes responsibility for presenting patient cases and contributing to the discussion of cases.

Demonstrates competence in the use of computerized information systems.

Is able to prioritize and complete calls in accordance with established timeframes.
