POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Laboratory Technician - NGS

POSITION REPORTS TO: Lead Product Scientist - NGS Services

DEPARTMENT: Genetics

LOCATION: Ann Arbor, MI

SUMMARY:

This is a role for a molecular biologist with experience working with DNA and RNA to perform laboratory experiments as part of our client service offerings. The Laboratory Technician will have project management responsibilities and will be adept at molecular biological bench work. Routine activities will involve standard NGS techniques. Research & development activities using the same skills are possible. Fundamental understanding of the concepts and methods of PCR, ligation and other enzymatic reactions, strong laboratory skills, organizational skills, note-taking diligence and attention to detail are key.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Evaluation of client-provided samples

• NGS sequencing library preparation

• Enrichment with hybridization probes

• PCR amplification/assessment

• Sequencing pool preparation

• Reagent preparation and maintenance

• Project note-taking and record keeping

EXPERIENCE

Required:

• Adept in sterile laboratory technique

• Familiar with DNA quantification techniques, including q/RT-PCR

• Able to calculate molecular quantity from volume and concentration

• Adept with Windows and spreadsheet software

Preferred:

• 6+ months post-undergraduate molecular laboratory work (academic or professional)

• Familiarity with NGS sample prep and automation

• Familiarity with NGS instrument operation (MiSeq, NextSeq, PGM, Proton)

• Experience in protocol optimization

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor's degree involving molecular biology laboratory work

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Works well with small team

• Flexibility in work hours (occasionally stay late or come in early)

• Exceptionally organized with accurate record keeping skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work most often performed in lab on computer. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
